“She’s That Kind of Person”

Maya had seen us watching when she went past with Miss Bruce. She was carrying all of her bedding. How terrible. I should never have looked out. Now she would think it was me who had got Miss Bruce, when it had been Clemmy.

Clemmy’s voice was stern and pleased. “Maya gets herself in trouble, Rose. She’s that kind of person.”

“You’ve made everything worse,” I said.

“Are you two ever going to bed?” called Stevie.

“We are now,” Clemmy said, ignoring me and skipping back to lie down. “It’s good if she shares with a teacher, Rose. It serves her right.”

I climbed slowly back into bed.

There was nothing I could do, was there?

I lay down and pulled the duvet and blanket up over my head. Imagine being in a cabin all on your own with just a teacher. Would you have to clean your teeth at the same time as her? You wouldn’t be able to get away.

Maya must be so furious. She would hate me even more.
